Government explained for English language learners

    Even if you don't like politics, you should know how your government works. You should understand basic things, for example what kind of government is in your country.

    The US is a fereral republic. This is union of 50 states, USA also have a federal district, Washington D.C. the district of Columbia. It is the capital. There are several teritories like Guam and Puerto Rico. 

    Not everyone in the government is elected. Some people a chosen from within. 

    US government has three branches. Each branch is responsible for different point. This is called the separation of powers. 

    The US was formed in 1776. The Constitution was written in 1787. It was ratified or approved in 1788. It went into effect in 1789. 

    The President belongs to the executive branch. This is the branch which executes or carries out the law. The President has the Cabinet- the groop of advisers. 

    The Legislative branch makes the law. It is caled the US Congress. 

    The Judicial branch interprets the laws. It is made up of the US Supreme Court. 

    The President is a Chief Executive and the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. He or she is elected by the people for a four-year term.

     They have two Senators from each state for a total of 100 Senators. They serve six-years term.
